WEN 3921 Scroll Saw Review (2023)

Updated 3/10/2023

It stands to reason that right when you find a tool you love everything about, the manufacturers distribute a new model.

Technology changes, we learn new things, and all of this leads to the production of a bigger, better, newer product.

But how much better? Just because one item discontinues, does that mean you need to rush out and purchase the latest and greatest?

Or, is it better to always stay at the top of the line?

We’re not here to tell you that new isn’t always better. The new lines are typically introduced because they’ve improved it.

Sometimes, they’re introduced because it’s just time to turn out a new product.

The Wen 3921 16-Inch Variable scroll saw is one such product.

Today, we will cover the differences between the Wen 3920 scroll saw model and the Wen 3921 model.

We will share with you what is new, what is better, and what you need to know about the two in comparison!

Wen has been in business since 1957. They are a well-known tool company, and they produce a lot of great tools that many people jump at.

One of their more recent tool releases is the Wen 3921 scroll saw, which came out to replace the Wen 3920.

The 3920 was a popular model, but it was time for a few upgrades.

WEN 3921 Scroll Saw Features

  • 16” throat size
  • Speed variables between 400 – 1600 SPM
  • 26 Pounds
  • Measures 26.38” x 13” x 14.75”
  • No tools are required for blade changes
  • Storage on unit
  • The blade can operate in 2 directions
  • Includes a dust port, blower, and light

The most notable change to point out here is that the Wen 3921 allows you to change the blades with zero tools.

That was not an option for the 3920 and therefore is a worthy upgrade.

There may also be some other changes, but this is perhaps the selling point difference between the two models.

The Wen 3921 scrolls saw is designed with a cast iron base, which gives you a steady and reliable foundation that will hold up while you put it to work.

The throat size of 16 inches gives you plenty of stability and working room for your wood-cutting techniques.

You have plenty of space and won’t be working so hard to balance your item while cutting.

This cast iron base was designed to reduce vibration so you can rely on higher accuracy.

Additionally, you can bevel the table at 45 degrees, to get just the right angle for any cut and to get your cut done right!

Ultimately, this scroll saw is well-designed, and the price is incredible. You don’t have to overspend to get a quality scroll saw. This one will do just fine.

On the flip side, treat the neck with care, as there are some reports of it cracking easily. We don’t see or hear about this often, but we know it’s happening out there.

However, if that’s the only negative factor, then this scroll saw is certainly worth a glance.

It’s not an expensive upgrade, and for some, it would be well worth the cost of an upgrade to appreciate the ability to change the blades without having any special tools or accessories.

Wen 3921 Standout Features

Let’s discuss what sets the Wen 3921 apart from other models and brands. Here are some things we want to highlight!

  • Tool-less blade changes
  • Special Features (dust port, air pump, & light)
  • Functionality

Tool-less Blade Changes

This is perhaps one of the most noteworthy features of this model and our very favorite thing.

We mentioned before that this feature alone nearly makes the Wen 3921 worth the upgrade.

For the Wen 3920, you have to have a specific accessory to change your blades, which makes it slightly more complicated – although not awful.

With the 3921 model, it’s a simple screwing feature, so it’s just a simplified process that allows you to continue moving without having to hunt down that special tool.

Special Features

Adding the dust port, air pump, and light are great, but they make a difference in your abilities.

It just makes your scroll saw work that much easier and increases your visibility as well. The light is adjustable.

We think you will see an improvement in your overall quality and efficiency with these features.

Functionality

Functionality… what does that even mean? In this case, we’re referring to the little things that make your scroll saw work more accurately and user-friendly.

The throat size, cast iron base, and adjustable angle provide you with a steady and reliable surface that sets you up for success while you work.

Seriously, can scroll saw work get any easier?

Wen 3920 Scroll Saw Overview

We have a lot to say about the Wen 3920, and it certainly has bragging rights. The Wen 3920 is a great scroll saw.

It has a great deal to offer, and if that is the model you have, you have a great saw on your hands.

Yes, there have been some upgrades, but that doesn’t negate the quality of this model.

Here are some of the key features of the Wen 3920 for your reference:

  • 16” throat size
  • Speed variables between 400 – 1600 SPM
  • 28 Pounds
  • Measures 24” x 11” x 13”
  • Blade storage on the unit
  • The blade can operate in 2 directions
  • Includes a dust blower and flexible LED light

You can see from this list that when you compare the Wen 3921 and 3920 scroll saws, the primary differences boil down to the unit’s size and the blade change mechanism.

For every other detail, this scroll saw is on par with its counterpart, the Wen 3921.

This is a very affordable unit, and it was a favorite before the 3921 came on the scene for a reason.

The Wen 3920 is slightly smaller, by only a couple of inches total, and weighs just a few pounds more than the 3921 scroll saw.

The Wen 3920 is also made with a cast iron base, giving you the durability and stability you need.

Additionally, this model is equipped with a bevel angle advantage. You can get the perfect cut any way you need.

You can rely on ideal speed ranges that give you control and accuracy while cutting. You can tension your blade quite easily.

While you do need a tool to change your blades, the process is simple.

The only downside is that the motor is not overly strong, and this scroll saw is best for wood, but we’re pretty sure it won’t disappoint.

Wen 3921 vs. Wen 3920- Overall Comparison

We’ve covered a lot of information about these two models – so what are the true differences?

When it comes right down to it, the differences are slim, and they may or may not affect your decision to upgrade.

Just know that the differences are outstanding and well worth the cost to upgrade, but if you choose to stick with your 3920 model, it’s a great saw to have on hand!

Here are the noteworthy differences that you will see between the two models:

  • The Wen 3920 measures slightly smaller overall
  • The Wen 3921 weighs 2 pounds less
  • The Wen 3921 offers tool-less blade changes
  • The Wen 3921 has a dust blower and extra storage

These are the features that may stand out to you between the two models.

On the other hand, here are the features that stayed the same across the board.

  • 45-degree bevel angle
  • Cast iron base
  • Portability size and weight
  • Speed variables ranging from 400 – 1600 SPM
  • Affordable price point
  • Flexible light and dust blower mechanisms
  • Blade storage
  • 2” cutting depth

Ultimately, the extraneous features remain the same. The quality and durability of this scroll saw have not changed from model to model.

You will also find the same reliability from Wen that you always have in a well-made tool that won’t disappoint you.

The differences aren’t huge, and they certainly won’t blow you out of the water, but they are worth noting, so you know what to expect if you’re considering an upgrade or comparing the two before you purchase.

Wrapping it Up

The Wen 3920 and the Wen 3921 offer a great solution for your scroll saw needs. These are affordable tools that are well-made, and you know they are designed to last and help you work.

While you may not always need to rush out and buy the newest and greatest model, it’s certainly an option worth your consideration.

If you’re trying to decide which one to buy right now, we say go for the newer model – the WEN 3921 really is the better option available of the two WEN models and one of the best scroll saws overall.
